In recent years, a lot of the media have been up in arms about people slipping in txt spk in thur englsh essays and tests, and how it would spell the end of civilisation as we know it. Putting aside all the Daily Mail style rants though, this is all just one of those things reflective of the era in which those people were growing up. The mid 90s being when the explosion of mobile use hit.

We're often warning people of the dangers of Black Hat SEO (traditionally spotted a mile off with tactics such as inappropriate keyword spamming spamming spamming keyword) both on this blog, and on the phone when someone has been guaranteed a number one position by someone who works for Google (we get the same calls ourselves).

Yes, hot on the heels of Ask's recent attempts to regain share of the market, we have another of the old stalwarts trying to win back some of the hotly contested 'people who don't use Google' crowd, leaving only Yahoo to pull something out of their hat now. In yet another new branding exercise (We've now been MSN Search, and Windows Live Search), Microsoft have abandoned their traditional names to jump on the Web 2.0 bandwagon with a nondescriptly named site, Bing.

Back to the Future... with Mascots

Those eagle eyed watchers of the media in the UK may have spotted a familiar butler popping up on advertising again in the last few weeks, proudly proclaiming 'he's back'. The search engine Ask Jeeves rather unceremoniously dropped their mascot 'Jeeves' as part of a large relaunch of the site as just 'Ask.com' a few years back, claiming people were associating him with an old and outdated website which only answered questions. Now, in an apparent complete reversal of that decision, they have slipped him back into the site complete with a new look, accompanying marketing campaign, and some obligatory social networking connections.
