The grass is always 'designed better' on the other side

Its such a hard thing to swallow, long-term clients asking you to pitch on jobs that you already know you are perfect for. You just want to take their brief and get started on the proposal, but with other agencies being invited to pitch; paranoia starts to creep in and you start to ask yourself questions "are we priced competitively" "are we too close to the client and project to see the job with fresh eyes" "do the other agencies have ideas that we were too scared to put forward or knew the client never had the budget for". Either way, you swallow your pride tell them that you want paying for your time and you give it 110%.

DancefloorI took a trip to Liverpool last weekend to take a look around the art galleries.

The Walker gallery has a great Bridget Riley exhibition on until the 13th December, showing past and recent work from the popular op-artist.  Although I would have liked to have seen more of her earlier work in a larger exhibition, the work was fantastic.  Riley has always been closely associated with the flamboyant fashion world of the 1960s.  Her early work of black and white geometric shapes captured the spirit of the 60s perfectly.  However, her influence doesn’t stop there.  Riley’s style can be seen in more recent fashion branding such as Paul Smiths’ coloured parallel lines.  Find out more about the exhibition here

“This Is Sculpture” at the Tate takes a unique look at the history of modern and contemporary sculpture.  Don a pair of wireless headphones and walk into a silent disco gallery filled with ambient lighting and mirror balls.

Classic disco tunes play as you wonder round viewing a number of sculptures displayed on specially created plinths.  You’re invited to pull some shapes on the Saturday Night Fever style dance floor in the centre of the space (designed by Kathrine Sandys - Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts).  This is a really unique and enjoyable way to view sculpture.  On the surface, there’s a air of fun and campness yet a dark undertone of eroticism and sinisterness lie underneath.  It’s on until April next year and it’s well worth a visit.  Find out more about it here.

Do images speak louder than words?; Presenting a design portfolio

A blog post sparked off another round of discussion in the Bourn Design Studio...

...The blog post titled "one of the best design agency sites I've seen in a long time" commented on a very simple website by a graphic designer based in NYC. It praised the website for it's simple, no-fuss style and applauded the site for not presenting any explanation of the work. The website was a single page with a continuous run of images. To navigate the site you just scroll down to view the work. At the bottom there was a simple message "Thank you. Please call etc". It was pointed out that within 60 seconds you can view all the work, decide if you like what you see and then get in touch. Simple. Genius. Naive?
